The Threatened

Mar 3, 2024

Today we will continue looking at the "8 Days" that changed the world and which are often referred to as Holy Week. Thus far we have looked at these "8 Days" through the lens of the Gospel writers themselves and their disproportionate coverage of these "8 days". We also looked at the "8 Days" through the eyes of Jesus (last Sunday). Today we are looking at the "8 Days" through the eyes of those that wanted Jesus crucified and ended up winning the day (well, at least they won out on Good Friday). Who were these groups and why did the plot, plan, and carry out the brutal death of Jesus? Finally, what lessons do these people have to teach us? It is my hope that the following study and reflection questions will be helpful in your Lenten journey, your spiritual journaling, or conversations with some trusted spiritual friends:

1. Name the different Jewish groups; who they were in a couple words; and why they felt threatened by Jesus?

2. Where does Jesus or the gospel message threaten our lives? Are there narratives that we tell ourselves which are counter to the gospel narrative?

3. In Pastor Rob's illustration of the 'mass baptism', what is it that you hold out of the water and keep from Jesus?
